  7.                   The Backup Professional EVALUATION NOTES
  8.                   ----------------------------------------

  10. The UniTrends Software Corp. evaluation series is designed to allow potential
  11. customers to evaluate a fully functional version of the Backup Professional(TM)
  12. product.  Any other use of these files are prohibted.
  13.  
  14. The evaluation will end 30 days from the day of the initial installation.  
  15.

  19. When you decide to purchase the product contact our sales department at
  20. 1-800-648-2827.  Once you have made your purchase & registered the product 
  21. with us you will be given a license key, media & manual.  This key will enable
  22. the product to function as a full live version from then on.

  25. Installing the distribution
  26. ---------------------------

  28. During the install files are temporarly placed in the /tmp directory.
  29. If /tmp is not of suffient size you will be prompted for and alternate
  30. temporary installation directory.
  31.  
  32. When the installation is complete all files in /tmp/bp will be removed.
  33.  
  34. To install for example the Solaris Server run, type.
  35.  
  36. ./sol_srv
  37.  
  38. When the file ./sol_srv is run the BP distribution will be
  39. extracted into the directory /tmp.  Then the install program will begin
  40. to run.
  41.  
  42. The install program will take you through the steps necessary to install 
  43. the distribution. Basically, it will ask you for directory locations to 
  44. place the files and license questions.
  45.  
  46. If this is a reinstall, you will be asked if you wish to overwrite certain 
  47. files. You may type the interrupt character or press return to continue.
  48.  
  49. Once the files have been moved to their permanent location, you will be given 
  50. a chance to review the release notes.

  52. 1.3    Setup and Configure the Installation
  53. ----------------------------------------

  55. You must now answer a few configuration questions about other file locations 
  56. and default tape device setup.
  57.  
  58. 1.3.1    Choose Database Location
  59. --------------------------------

  61. This will allow you to select the location of the database files. 
  62. The database for The Backup Professional may become very large, so you may 
  63. wish to specify a directory on a partition with space to grow. 
  64. Note that this is the database that is shipped with The Backup Professional 
  65. and has nothing to do with any database you may currently have on the system.

  67. 1.3.2    Reports Location
  68. ------------------------

  70. The Backup Professional creates reports about a backup status, failures etc. 
  71. You may specify a different location for these reports.

  73. 1.3.3    Administration Security
  74. -------------------------------

  76. A few enhanced security features have been implemented in The Backup 
  77. Professional to allow user configuration. There are currently two options, 
  78. Sysadmin indicates the username of the system administrator and defaults to 
  79. root. The Override Password may be used by other users to perform sensitive 
  80. tasks such as restoring a backup to a different machine.

  82. 1.3.4    Daemon Install
  83. ----------------------
  84. The server daemon(bpserverd) is implemented through inetd(8). 
  85. This section of the install will add entries to /etc/services and 
  86. /etc/inetd.conf for the daemon. It will check for any conflicts in these files
  87. with the IP Port used by the daemon. If your system has any daemons running 
  88. outside of inetd(8), you may wish to check these entries for a conflict.

  90. 1.3.5    Tape Device
  91. -------------------

  93. You must specify at least one tape device on the system. This section will
  94. allow you to enter the information about a tape drive on the system.

  96. 1.3.6    Database Creation
  97. -------------------------
  98. A minimal setup will be used to create the database tables that are used by 
  99. The Backup Professional. If there are any errors in creating these tables, 
  100. most likely The Backup Professional will not operate. In this case, call 
  101. technical support for assistance.

  103. 1.4 Running your first backup
  104. -----------------------------

  106. Once the Backup Professional is installed you should be able to immediately 
  107. do a backup of the server to the tape drive you specified.
  108.  
  109. Step 1 should be to test your tape to ensure that it is functioning 
  110. properly with BP. If you are not using the /dev/rmt/0 and are having failures
  111. you may need to tell BP to use BSD sytle tape motions.
  112. This is in the Admin utility under setup and settings in the [sctape] section.

  114. Step 2 is to start the Backup utility from the menu.
  115. Step 3 is to click on the run button.  This will perform a Master backup 
  116. and then verify the contents.
