The Backup Professional EVALUATION NOTES
----------------------------------------
The UniTrends Software Corp. evaluation series is designed to allow potential
customers to evaluate a fully functional version of the Backup Professional(TM)
product. Any other use of these files are prohibted.
The evaluation will end 30 days from the day of the initial installation.
Technical support is available to assist you with any Backup Professional
questions. Call (843) 626-2878 9-6 EST. M-F or via email support@unitrends.com
When you decide to purchase the product contact our sales department at
1-800-648-2827. Once you have made your purchase & registered the product
with us you will be given a license key, media & manual. This key will enable
the product to function as a full live version from then on.
Installing the distribution
---------------------------
During the install files are temporarly placed in the /tmp directory.
If /tmp is not of suffient size you will be prompted for and alternate
temporary installation directory.
When the installation is complete all files in /tmp/bp will be removed.
To install for example the Solaris Server run, type.
./sol_srv
When the file ./sol_srv is run the BP distribution will be
extracted into the directory /tmp. Then the install program will begin
to run.
The install program will take you through the steps necessary to install
the distribution. Basically, it will ask you for directory locations to
place the files and license questions.
If this is a reinstall, you will be asked if you wish to overwrite certain
files. You may type the interrupt character or press return to continue.
Once the files have been moved to their permanent location, you will be given
a chance to review the release notes.
1.3 Setup and Configure the Installation
----------------------------------------
You must now answer a few configuration questions about other file locations
and default tape device setup.
1.3.1 Choose Database Location
--------------------------------
This will allow you to select the location of the database files.
The database for The Backup Professional may become very large, so you may
wish to specify a directory on a partition with space to grow.
Note that this is the database that is shipped with The Backup Professional
and has nothing to do with any database you may currently have on the system.
1.3.2 Reports Location
------------------------
The Backup Professional creates reports about a backup status, failures etc.
You may specify a different location for these reports.
1.3.3 Administration Security
-------------------------------
A few enhanced security features have been implemented in The Backup
Professional to allow user configuration. There are currently two options,
Sysadmin indicates the username of the system administrator and defaults to
root. The Override Password may be used by other users to perform sensitive
tasks such as restoring a backup to a different machine.
1.3.4 Daemon Install
----------------------
The server daemon(bpserverd) is implemented through inetd(8).
This section of the install will add entries to /etc/services and
/etc/inetd.conf for the daemon. It will check for any conflicts in these files
with the IP Port used by the daemon. If your system has any daemons running
outside of inetd(8), you may wish to check these entries for a conflict.
1.3.5 Tape Device
-------------------
You must specify at least one tape device on the system. This section will
allow you to enter the information about a tape drive on the system.
1.3.6 Database Creation
-------------------------
A minimal setup will be used to create the database tables that are used by
The Backup Professional. If there are any errors in creating these tables,
most likely The Backup Professional will not operate. In this case, call
technical support for assistance.
1.4 Running your first backup
-----------------------------
Once the Backup Professional is installed you should be able to immediately
do a backup of the server to the tape drive you specified.
Step 1 should be to test your tape to ensure that it is functioning
properly with BP. If you are not using the /dev/rmt/0 and are having failures
you may need to tell BP to use BSD sytle tape motions.
This is in the Admin utility under setup and settings in the [sctape] section.
Step 2 is to start the Backup utility from the menu.
Step 3 is to click on the run button. This will perform a Master backup
and then verify the contents.
Online help is available from the Main Menu or from the Admin utility.
